Water in the Winter
12/11/2023 (Permalink)
In an environment where the weather is constantly fluctuating between temperatures ranging from the 10s to the 40s, the occurrence of sporadic snowfall, melting snow, and subsequent freezing is a common challenge. These variations can pose potential threats to your property, leading to water intrusions through inadequately sealed areas like the roof, walls, windows, or even from leaking appliances or broken pipes.
Should you notice any signs of water damage, regardless of their apparent severity, it is essential to promptly address the issue. Water and moisture-related problems, whether visible or concealed behind insulation or within wall surfaces, have the potential to harbor bacteria, foster mold growth, induce rot, emit odors, or cause other unseen damages. Regardless of the magnitude of the problem, reaching out to our professionals for a complimentary initial assessment and estimate is strongly recommended.
Prioritizing safety during water cleanup is crucial. If feasible, take steps to prevent further damage while waiting for our professional team's arrival. In cases where self-intervention is not practical, our team will act promptly to:
- Identify the source and type of water.
- Measure temperature and humidity for drying analysis.
- Survey the extent of damage and inspect the premises.
- Perform emergency water extraction.
- Apply necessary treatments.
- Employ drying equipment and monitor the drying process.
Throughout the water remediation process, we work in collaboration with you and your insurance company, should you have initiated a claim. Remember, it is imperative not to let water of any type linger; give us a call, and we will be there promptly to assist!

Floods Happen. SERVPRO Is Here To Help 24/7/365
9/1/2023 (Permalink)
Floods Rank As One Of The Most common and widespread natural disasters in the United States. Whether you live near a coastline, along city streets, in the mountains, near a river or even in the desert, there is a potential for suffering flood damage.
Just because you haven't experienced a flood in the past, doesn't mean you wont in the future. In fact, 20% of call claims paid by the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) were for policies in low-risk communities. On average, floods cost $3 billion in annual losses in the United States. Commercial flood claims average more than $75,000.
According to the American Red Cross (ARC), floods cause more damage in the U.S. every year than any other weather-related disaster. The ARC offers the following flood safety tips.
-Stay away from flood waters. If you come up on a flowing stream where water is above your ankles, stop, turn around and go another way. Six inches of swiftly moving water can sweep you off your feet.
-If you approach a flooded road while driving, turn around and go another way. If you are caught on a flooded road and waters are rising rapidly around you, get out of the car quickly and move to higher ground. Most cars can be swept away by less than two feet of moving water.
-Keep children out of the water. They are curious and often lack judgment about running water or contaminated water. Keep your pets out of the water too.
If a flood does strike your home or business, contact your local SERVPRO Franchise Professionals. Even minor floods have the potential to cause major damage to a structure when not treated quickly and properly, and the cleanup is often an overwhelming task. Flood damage? What if it from a storm? Don’t worry, SERVPRO is here!
10/13/2021 (Permalink)
If your Floyd County building is damaged during a storm you might think that all of the water damage falls into one category. However, this is not necessarily the case. Flood damage is actually a bit different from other types of damage caused by water. The following are a few distinctions.
Where the Water Comes From
Perhaps the easiest way to determine whether you are dealing with flood damage or other water damage is to figure out where the water is coming from. Generally, if the water comes from above, then it is regular water damage. This can include leaks and broken pipes. If the water is rising up from the ground, then this is always considered flood water.
The Level of Water Contamination
A lot of the water involved in storm damage is considered to be category 1 or clean water. Water from damaged pipes or supply lines also belongs to this category. Flood water, on the other hand, is category 3 or black water. This means that it is highly contaminated and should be avoided. This is because water from a flood mixes with sewage and other contaminants on the ground. Anything that it touches, including home contents, will need to be thrown away or thoroughly sanitized.
Whether It is Included in Your Insurance Policy
Another important difference between damage from a flood and damage from other water sources is that flooding is usually not included in your basic insurance policy. If you want coverage for this type of damage, then you will need to purchase a separate flood policy. Whether you are dealing with clean water or flood damage, you will need to have it taken care for quickly to avoid further damage to your building.
Moisture of any type can contribute to weakened materials or mold growth. SERVPRO of Floyd County can remove the water and perform any necessary repairs.
Ask The Experts: How Quickly Do I Need To Call SERVPRO After I Find Water Damage?
8/25/2021 (Permalink)
The amount of damage water can cause is amazing and often underestimated by homeowners. Excess moisture is bad enough, but when a home is flooded or hit with a plumbing disaster (like a busted pipe), the situation can quickly get out of hand. There’s a reason why these incidents are among the most expensive problems a homeowner can face.
Floods, sewage back flows, and other sources of contaminated fluid usually cause the worst damage. Water can be filled with all kinds of deadly substances, ranging from chemical residues to animal feces to parasites. Bacteria, viruses and fungi grow in an alarming rate in contaminated fluid, and severe health risks can be caused by these contaminants.
This problem is compounded by the composition of most homes, which are filled with organic materials. Drywall, wood and the matter that is trapped in carpet fibers are just a few examples, and they can give pathogens room to grow. Within 48 hours, mold may begin creeping behind the walls and releasing spores, and any organic materials that have been soaked through by contaminated fluid will usually have to be destroyed.
SERVPRO of Floyd County will dry the home quickly and apply antibacterial, antiviral, and anti fungal agents to all surfaces that had contact with the water. This ensures the family can return to a safe home.
Hardwood floor water damage
8/11/2021 (Permalink)
We received a call from a customer in a panic over their refrigerator pouring water throughout their kitchen. Our marketing representative took the call and immediately stopped what he was doing and went straight out to the house.
Upon arrival, it was discovered they were able to shut the water off so the leak had stopped. However, there was still the issue of water all over there kitchen and there brand new hardwood floors. SERVPRO immediately started extracting the water up while the rest of the crew starting getting the drying mats out to make sure the hardwood floors were completely dry. A few days later we were out there picking up all the equipment and doing our final walk through and moisture checks. The customer was so happy that SERVPRO of Floyd County was able to come out so quickly and made their loss truly “Like it never even happened.”
